Gladwin woman killed when car hits buggy

GLADWIN COUNTY – A Gladwin woman was killed and two injured when the Amish buggy they were in were hit from behind by a car

According to a statement from the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Department, on Friday, Aug. 1 at about 2:30 p.m., deputies from the Gladwin responded to a personal injury crash on Round Lake Road (F-97) south of Renas Road in Butman Township involving a motor vehicle and an Amish buggy.

Investigators determined the buggy was occupied by three Amish women, ages 58, 25 and 17, and was traveling northbound on Round Lake Road about one-quarter mile south of Renas Road.

The buggy was struck from behind by a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, also traveling northbound, driven by a 38-year-old woman from Butman Township.

The 58-year-old Amish woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two Amish women were taken to MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin with non-life-threatening injuries.

The section of Round Lake Road where the crash occurred was closed for several hours while a Michigan State Police accident reconstructionist investigated.

The Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Gladwin City Police Department, Gladwin Fire and Rescue, and Butman Township Fire and Rescue.

The crash remains under investigation. Reports will be forwarded to the Gladwin County prosecutor for review.
