Sanford man drowns in Dunham Lake

ROSCOMMON COUNTY – A 25 year-old Sanford man drowned when his kayak overturned in the icy waters of Dunham Lake

According to a statement from the Michigan State Police, on Sunday, Jan. 7, about 10:45 a.m. a passerby called 911 after seeing a person in the water next to a kayak they believed to be drowning in Dunham Lake.

According to a statement from the Michigan State Police, The caller attempted to rescue the person but were unsuccessful. The person in the water may have been using the kayak to break the ice and fish from it.

A trooper from the Michigan State Police
(MSP) Houghton Lake Post responded along with deputies from the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies deployed their ice rescue, air boats, and dive team.

The Roscommon County Dive Team recovered the body of a 24-year-old man Sanford, Michigan.

Responding agencies included the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office, conservation officers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Denton Township Police Department, and fire departments
from Nester, Richfield, Markey, Lake Townships along with Butman Township Fire from Gladwin County.
