Alcohol suspected in crash caused by man driving 105 mph

ANTRIM COUNTY – On Monday, November 6, 2023, at approximately 6:00 p.m. troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post responded to a report of a three-vehicle crash on US-131 near Corey Rd in Chestonia Township.

The preliminary investigation revealed two pickup trucks traveling southbound on US-131 were involved in a collision. This initial collision caused one of the pickup trucks to
then collide with an SUV traveling northbound on US-131.

In total, five persons were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries. One patient was airlifted to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A 15-year-old was later flown to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids for further medical treatment.

The speedometer of the at-fault vehicle, driven by a 40-year-old Elmira man, indicated it was traveling 105 mph upon impact. Alcohol is suspected to be a cause of the accident. The crash remains under investigation.

The Antrim County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, and several fire departments assisted at the scene.
