Kalkaska man charged in stolen cabin case

KALKASKA COUNTY- On Feb. 16, 2022, the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post requested help investigating the theft of a cabin. The 12 x 28 cabin was located on County Road 571 in Cold Springs Township when it was reported stolen. The theft occurred sometime between Nov. 18, 2021, and Dec. 16, 2021.

Troopers followed up on multiple tips from the public of various cabins that matched the one in the original photo. Several search warrants were executed on cellular devices. Many interviews followed and 43-year-old Jeremy James Knoll from Kalkaska, became a suspect when the cabin was found on his property during a search warrant. Knoll had attempted to conceal the cabin on his property by erecting large pieces of sheet metal around it as well as altering its appearance. Troopers located matching serial numbers from inside the stolen cabin.

An arrest warrant was authorized on Dec. 27, 2022. Knoll was arrested on Jan. 1, 2023, and lodged in the Kalkaska County Jail. The investigation continues and there may be more arrests in this case. Knoll was arraigned in the 87-B District Court in Kalkaska County for one count Receiving and Concealing Stolen property $1000-$20,000. He was given a $20,000 10% bond.

His next scheduled court appearance is on Feb. 27, 2023.
