Lake Leelanau woman killed while walking dog

LEELANAU COUNTY – A 43-year-old Lake Leelanau woman was struck and killed last night while walking her dog on S. Lake Shore Drive in Leland Township.

On Thursday, Dec. 8 at approximately 7:22 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post were called to a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on S. Lake Shore Drive near E. Lingaur Road.

A preliminary investigation indicates the 43-year-old woman was walking her dog northbound on the shoulder of the road when she was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by a 52-year-old woman from Lake Leelanau. The victim and her dog died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle had consumed alcohol prior to the crash. The driver was arrested and lodged in the Leelanau County Jail.

Names are being withheld pending arraignment and next of kin notification.
