LEWISTON – On January 2, 2022, troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Gaylord Post were dispatched to Otsego Memorial Hospital for an alleged child abuse and neglect case. Troopers spoke with the attending physician who informed them a 4-year-old child was brought to the ER earlier in the afternoon who was extremely malnourished and had numerous bruises on his body. An ultrasound indicated internal bleeding and an internal organ laceration, caused by blunt force trauma. The child was flown to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
The investigation resulted in arrest warrants being authorized by the Montmorency Prosecutor’s Office for the child’s mother, 30-year-old Nicole Judith Needham from Lewiston and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Casey James Haskin, also from Lewiston.
Haskin was arrested in their home in Lewiston and lodged in the Alpena County Jail. Needham was arrested at her mother’s residence in Barton City and lodged in the Alpena County Jail.
Haskin was arraigned on February 24th in the 88th District Court in Montmorency County for one count First Degree Child Abuse. His bond was set at $150,000 cash surety. His next scheduled court appearance is on March 11, 2022.
