Katherine Lynne Reeves, affectionately known to everyone as Lynne, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026, at the age of 91.

Born on January 17, 1935, in Brookville, Pennsylvania, Lynne was the cherished daughter of Andrew and Katherine (Rea) Barr. The second of four children, she grew up with a sharp mind and a determined spirit.

Lynne dedicated much of her life to keeping her community organized, working as a skilled secretary for several notable local institutions including Bear Archery, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the City of Grayling. Her hard work and dependable nature left a lasting impact on all who worked alongside her.

Beyond her professional life, Lynne was the bedrock of her family. She raised three sons, Timothy, Curtis, and (Francis)Todd and as well as her two oldest grandchildren Jennifer and Jamie. She took immense joy in watching her family grow, eventually welcoming seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren into her heart. Lynne was known for her deep, fierce love for her family, which she paired beautifully with a famously sassy personality that kept everyone on their toes and filled her home with laughter.

She was preceded in death by her son, Todd, grandson Tyler Reeves and lifelong companion, Duane Brooks. She is survived and dearly missed by her sons Timothy and Curtis (Deanna) Evans; her daughter-in-law Tammy Reeves (Rod Foltz); her beloved grandchildren (Jennifer Lutz, Jamie Vangel, Cameron Evans, Amanda Reeves, Madelyn Evans, and Tristan Reeves) and great-grandchildren (Gabrielle Lutz, Jillian and Benjamin Burton). Her quick wit, vibrant spirit, and devotion to her loved ones will never be forgotten.

Per Lynne’s wishes, a private family gathering will be held at a later date. The family would also like to give a special thank you to the staff of Northern Pines Assisted Living and Compassus Hospice.

HOUGHTON LAKE– The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will begin improvements this summer at the South Unit of Houghton Lake Flats, a popular wildlife viewing and fishing area along U.S. 127 in Roscommon County.

The project will rehabilitate the aging dike system, allowing the DNR to better control water levels in the 350-acre wetland and improve habitat for wildlife. Built in the 1960s to help offset environmental impacts from construction of U.S. 127, the South Unit includes several miles of dikes, a dam and water control structures.

According to DNR wildlife biologist Mark Boersen, the current pump system failed several years ago, limiting the DNR’s ability to manage water levels. In addition, the aging dam can no longer safely and efficiently hold water.

Construction crews will replace the concrete dam, pumphouse, underground pipes and related equipment with updated infrastructure. Work is expected to begin once water levels recede and continue through the fall.

During construction, the South Unit gazebo and fishing platform will be closed to the public. However, the North Unit, located north of County Road 300, will remain open.

Houghton Lake Flats is known for waterfowl hunting, fishing and birdwatching, with species such as trumpeter swans, black terns, osprey and American bittern frequently spotted in the area. Visitors may still access the dikes and hand-launch boats during the project.

The project is part of the DNR’s ongoing efforts to modernize Michigan’s aging dams and dike systems.

By Joel Vernier

As I settled into my “Comfy Chair,” I was a bit frustrated because I could not use one of my dozens of comfy blankies.

I have one for almost every holiday and time of year. I don’t have one on a day like today; hot and humid! I’m a bit frugal, so I don’t like to turn on the Air Conditioning until the temperature exceeds 90 degrees. The high today is only 89 degrees. High humidity only happens in Mid-Michigan about 15-20 days a summer.

This has been an unusual year; we have already had at least 15 AC-worthy days, according to my Consumers Energy monitoring. I check my energy use online on the Consumers home page every couple of days. It will show you your energy use for yesterday, the week, and month. Using the AC or a dehumidifier in the basement spikes your energy use.

A Hot Tub also will put you in the stratosphere of spiking your bill. And don’t forget the %50 increase in kilowatt-hours from 2pm to 7pm! There have been days like today that I regret not using the AC, as the low tonight is 74 with high humidity. That makes it hard to get a nap or even a great night’s sleep.

High humidity over 60% causes many problems for some people. The air feels stale; hair gets frizzy (not a problem for me). You sweat more, and it doesn’t evaporate; you feel hot and sticky, and you might even smell spoiled. Even the best deodorants won’t live up to their TV ads. When the air holds more moisture, it also holds the heat. Storms can pop up quickly, and some can be severe.

If your basement gets too much humidity, things can get moldy: walls, wood, your favorite stuffed animal, chairs, couches, etc. The first can take on a slight green tint, like a newly planted field just beginning to turn green. High humidity can make small tasks like getting the mail or taking out the garbage a trial worthy of a Hercules-type test of skill & endurance! Mowing the lawn is not even possible for the normal retired human being. The news media is screaming at you to stay indoors, stay hydrated, and keep watching the news. The landscapers and road construction crews really deserve our respect! It’s so hot and humid that my dogs don’t even want to go outside!

I remember going down to a meeting in Boca Raton, Florida, in July. As I exited the plane, it felt like I was walking into an oven, hot and humid; I began to sweat in about 3 steps. It felt like I was in the tropics or on another planet. Why have we not marketed a bodysuit with air conditioning and refreshing scents, like eucalyptus? Or maybe just infuse some essential oils into the bodysuit. I rode the smelly, moldy, bumpy hotel shuttle and entered the hotel’s very AC-controlled lobby; travel in real life is not as glamorous as in the movies. Movies portray travel beginning with the plane taking off and cool music.

The next scene is in a fancy hotel room, with no hassles with luggage and transportation to the hotel. My room was in the main building, so I did not have to go back outside into the elements and sweat again. I entered my room and looked out the window I was excited to see three different-sized pools.

The pool chairs were loaded with people all oiled up and marinating for the evening’s activities. I could hardly wait to get there and slip into one of the pools. I quickly put on my bathing suit, flip-flops, and t-shirt and headed out to my pool of choice. It was a huge pool with a working water slide packed with kids and adults playing like they were kids. Lots of people in the pool. I found a deep end, 6 ft. I jumped in feet-first, anticipating a refreshing dip, but as the water surrounded my body, I felt almost nauseous; it was hotter than the air! Awful!

I grew up in Michigan, and even on a hot day, the water is usually cold or at least refreshing when you immerse yourself in a lake or pool. In fact, the lakes and pools in early June are downright chilly, frigid, and it takes a while for some of us older folks to get into the water and teeth chatter until you get used to the temperature.

There can be a lot of complaining or even screaming about how cold the water is at first. I love that refreshing feeling. I immediately got out of the hot tub and Florida pool, went to my room, and showered off. Note to self: go to Florida in January, not July, even though the rates are lower.

Back in Michigan, I reluctantly turned on the AC. After a while, the humidity was removed, the temperature was down, and I could use a lightweight summer-designed throw blanky again. I selected the one with water, fish, and shells on it. Time for a well-deserved nap if I can quit thinking about how much my next electric bill will be.

“Remember, every day is a gift! Some are just a little more fun to open than others.
