All’s fun at the canoe race

ROSCOMMON – The aluminum canoe races returned to Roscommon July 17. Eight businesses competed in the approximately three-mile race, from Wallace Park to Steckert Bridge.

It was a perfect day for the race with temperatures in the 80s. The two heats of four canoes each, left the park and paddled their way between those tubing and kayaking on the south branch of the AuSable River.

“This was a way to get new people who aren’t racers on the river,” said Sean Brabant, organizer of the race. “And a way to promote the businesses.”

First Women’s team and fifth overall were Amber and Crystal (and Emma) of Skye High Gymnastics Center. First Mixed team and seventh overall were Rob and Koreen of Kabintree Koncepts.

Proceeds of the race go to insurance and scholarship programs for the Roscommon County Canoe Racing Association.
