Scouting – it’ in the family

ROSCOMMON – Brandon Hahn of Roscommon recently achieved something few Boy Scouts achieve, receiving his Eagle Scout rank.

To attain the rank of Eagle Scout, a Boy Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges including 12 required badges. He must hold a position of responsibility in the troop after attaining the rank of Life Scout. He must also plan, develop and lead a service project in the community; and finally, he must pass an Eagle Scout board of review. Only around six percent of Boy Scouts attain Eagle.

Brandon far exceeded the 21 required badges by earning 52 merit badges through his scouting years. He was the 65th member of Roscommon Troop 644 to receive the Eagle ranking.

His service project was to build a rain catching system for the Roscommon Community Garden. Rain gutters and barrels were set up next to the shed at the garden to collect rain water.

<span “=””>’I chose this project because I wanted to do something helpful that would affect the community for generations,’ Brandon said.

Brandon is the second scout in his family to achieve the rank of Eagle. His older brother Jonathan received the rank in 2013. His younger brother, Kevin, is also in Boy Scouts and is working his way to Eagle. And his mother, Karen, has been involved in Scouts since 2002.
