COA sponsors Roscommon Car Show

ROSCOMMON – Roscommon County Commission on Aging (RCCOA) will hold its premiere ‘Meals-on-Wheels’ Car Show, Saturday, August 12 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Roscommon Firemen’ Training Grounds, 290 Ballenger Road, Roscommon.
With a goal of raising funds for their ‘Meals-on-Wheels’ program, a hot meatloaf dinner will be served from noon – 1 p.m. and will be representative of what program participants receive.
‘It’ going out just like it would if you were a home-bound person. We want the people to see what we do,’ COA Activities Coordinator Debra Looney said.
Meals-on-Wheels drivers deliver a well balanced, hot meal to home bound seniors. In addition, drivers provide daily surveillance of client’ health and well being, and can offer participants a feeling that people care about them.
According to a statement by Tom Pettit, RCCOA Director, ‘Over the last several years we have seen significant growth in our meals program, indicating that the need is increasing. We have already served 53,000 meals to homebound clients this year to date (since Oct. 1, 2016). While we receive grant funds, the need surpasses the funds. This is our largest fundraiser to date.’
For fiscal year 2017, RCCOA received grant monies totally $140,000 from the government specifically for Meals-on-Wheels. With additional funds of $75,000 from local donations and fund raisers, their total income is $215,000. The costs are expected to be $497,000 leaving a budget deficit of $282,000. Funds come out of the millage to cover any deficit.
‘Anything we raise will allow more money for other programs,’ Pettit said.

‘The reason we are holding the car show is to raise awareness of the Meals-on-Wheels program and the benefit it provides to the communities.”

Trophies will be awarded to participants in a variety of categories at the end of the day.
Entry fee is $20/car and driver. Those who preregister by July 28 will be entered for a chance to win a $25 gas card.
Admission for the day is free, and the COA is hoping for great community support.
