Helping young and old move with the music

By Tim Jenks
COMINS – Jade Koslow wants to help you experience music in a new way.

The long-time Mio resident has opened Melodic Sound Studio, where she offers piano accompaniment services, lessons at all levels and Music and Movements classes for children. On Feb. 17, she performed at the Skyline Event Center with the Skyline Band and Doc Bumgard.

Koslow, born in Indianapolis, came to Mio at 9 with her mother. They chose to homeschool, and the experience gave her freedom to explore her passion for music and other interests, including a black belt in karate, time in Europe, and summers at music camp.

She continued her education at Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wisconsin, graduating with a degree in Piano Pedagogy and a certification in Early Childhood Music and Movement. Koslo returned to Mio last year and announced the opening of her studio.

Working in an uncluttered room at Mio Baptist Church late on a Tuesday afternoon, Jade brings out a box of props – balls, springy shapes, and other attractive items – sets it in the middle of the floor, and waits for her young students. She works with children from babies to age 3 or 4 in this class, and prefers to keep the number low enough to provide a lot of individual attention. She strongly encourages the parents to stay and participate.

‘This is a learning and bonding activity, not a drop-off babysitting service,’ she said. ‘The parents need to move too. I can’t make them do it, but I push it a lot!’

She begins singing – no canned music here – and engaging the children as soon as they arrive, and the next half hour brings a steady flow of music, toys, marching, arm waving, and more. She sings nonstop throughout the session; even taking out props and putting them away involve a song and some special movements that the children (and the moms and dads) seem to enjoy thoroughly.

Jade hopes to offer her classes in more venues throughout the area, and perhaps expand her reach to other ages. Keep up with her activities on her Facebook page for Melodic Sounds Studio, or call 989-390-4001.
