Dorothy Irene Sommer of Houghton Lake

Dorothy Irene Sommer, 86, of Houghton Lake passed away on Jan. 6, 2018 at King Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Houghton Lake.

Dorothy was born on February 13, 1931 in Highland Park, Michigan to Arthur and Muriel (Robson) Pitcher. She grew up in the Detroit area graduating from Detroit Southeastern High School.

Dorothy was married on January 19, 1951 in Detroit to John W. Sommer. She spent her married years as a home maker and devoted wife and mother. Dorothy was a volunteer with the Oakwood Hospital Guild in Dearborn for twenty three years. The couple moved from Dearborn to Houghton Lake in 1992, where they had been coming to their cabin for several years. Dorothy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, St. John Lutheran Church Ladies Aide, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting and will be remembered for her desserts she brought to the monthly Republican Committee Meetings.

Surviving Mrs. Sommer are her loving husband of almost 67 years, John W. Sommer of Houghton Lake; three daughters, Linda (John) Duskey of CO, Janis Cameron of Grand Blanc and Barbara (Edwin) Oswald of Canton; son, Gary (Brenda) Sommer of NC; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Elmer Pitcher of Northville, Ronald Pitcher of OH, and Mark Pitcher of Brownstown; sister, Glenda Chickonoski of Sterling Heights; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shirley Patterson.

Funeral Services for Dorothy Irene Sommer will be conducted 11:00 am Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 from St John Lutheran Church with Pastor Ted Voll officiating. Interment will be in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel.

Memorial contributions in memory of Dorothy are asked to be directed to St. John Lutheran Church. Condolences can be sent to the family online at www.christler-holdship.com.
