Vikings boys beat Gaylord, fall to Boyne City

By Greg Gielczyk
GRAYLING
It was a tough loss, to say the least. Despite good defense inside the arc that held
the Boyne City Ramblers to just 31 percent three-point shooting, the Grayling Vikings boys
basketball team lost a rugged 49-44 game Thursday, Dec. 8.
Two uncontested three-point shots down the stretch proved costly
for the Vikings.
“We started out very slow out of the gates to start the game,” Grayling coach Rich Moffit said. “We struggled against pressure and turned the ball over 21 times in the game. I was impressed with our team in that they fought back in the second quarter to take the lead at the half. Our kids competed all night. We were successful when we were aggressive offensively and attacked the basket.”
Troy Summers paced the Vikings on the boards with 19 rebounds. Justin Nicholas and Trey
Moffit combined for 23 points. Nicholas had a team-leading 12 points while Moffit contributed
11 while Spencer White and Summers scored seven each.

Shaking off a slow start that found them trailing early, the Grayling boys basketball team
managed to battle all the way back for a stirring 64-54 in an away non-conference win over the Gaylord Blue Devils on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
It looked like the Vikings were on a downward slope and slipping throughout the first half.
Gaylord built on a 13-11 first quarter advantage by outscoring Grayling, 16-10 in the second for an eight-point, 29-21 bulge at the half. The Vikings would use the halftime break to regroup and have the coaching staff come up with the necessary adjustments that would lead to a second half come back that began when Ryan Anderson scorched the Blue Devils defense for a three-point basket.
But the Blue Devils stemmed the early rush by the Vikings and maintained a 10-point lead, 31-21 early in the third. It wasn’t until the Vikings erupted for a 9-0 run that included a three-point basket by Trey Moffit that the tide began to turn, vaulting them into a 45-43 lead going into the fourth period.
White poured in 21 points to lead the Vikings. He also contributed six rebounds and was a
facilitator with four assists. Nicholas produced a double-double with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Summer added 13 points and eight rebounds.
