Otsego County approves transfer of University Center operations to Kirtland

GAYLORD ‘ At a December 14 meeting attended by Otsego County Administration, Otsego County Commissioners and Kirtland Community College administration, an agreement was signed to transfer the operation of the University Center Gaylord (UC) to Kirtland.

Following 18 months of fact finding, discussion and finalization, this agreement officially transfers all UC assets to Otsego County and dissolves the University Center. Kirtland will take over operations of the entire facility, located at 80 Livingston Blvd., on January 1.

‘The more we all talked, it became apparent a merger would be a good fit for all parties,’ said Otsego County Commissioner Ken Borton.

‘Kirkland knows how to run a successful operation. I look forward to a continued and mutually beneficial relationship for years to come.’

The educational complex will continue to offer a wide variety of skilled trades training and other educational opportunities to students throughout northern Michigan. ‘With the demand for skilled trades increasing, Kirtland stands ready to meet that demand and grow programs that will serve students and industry in our region,’ said UC Board Chairperson Sheila Simpson.

‘This transition of the University Center to Kirtland management is a win/win for taxpayers. We will pay less millage for the University Center in the future. It also benefits area students who will continue to have access to a variety of certificate and degree programs. Local employers will benefit by having a larger number of prepared and skilled workers to strengthen our local workforce.”

Beginning in January, Kirtland will manage all UC operations. Educational access and available services are not expected to change; the transfer of operations will be seamless and transparent to community members.

“The new partnership between Kirtland and Otsego County, with regard to the University Center, will provide area students with more educational opportunities to further their post high school development, ‘said University Center Director Jim Hilgendorf. ‘Kirtland brings a quality reputation for excellence and this merger will only amplify that concept.”
