Wallace Park gets a facelift

ROSCOMMON – Wallace Park in Roscommon now has a breathtaking new breakwall and canoe launch, thanks to work by village officials and a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held noon on Friday to celebrate the rehabilitation project, which also includes grills, fishing platform, picnic table and additional walkways.

The project was started Aug. 1 and completed Sept. 15.

Present for the ceremony were members of council, employees and former Village Manager Allen Lowe, who spearheaded the project.

‘It was really the people in the village who made this possible,’ he said.

‘They came up with the idea and the plan. All I did was write the grant and get the project started.’

Also in attendance were members of the Higgins Lake-Roscommon Lions Club and Roscommon Rotary.

The Rotary Club built the bathrooms at the park, but it was the Lions who put together the iconic pavilion in 1983. The entire pavilion was built with donated funds and labor, including the cutting and hauling of logs from area forests, where they were converted into lumber. A bronze plaque honoring the Lions is mounted on a stone near the pavilion.

Others in attendance included members of the Higgins Township Board, Higgins Lake-Roscommon Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Development Authority, Roscommon County Sheriff Department and local residents.

The ceremony was sponsored by the DDA. The Lions Club supplied the hot dogs and Higgins Township Supervisor Bill Curnilia was grillmaster.
