Roscommon netters to face McBain in district final tonight

By Greg Gielczyk

MCBAIN — One title down, another in sight.

Riding the momentum from winning three matches in the Jack Pine Conference tournament last week to clinch an outright title, the Roscommon girls volleyball team swept the Lake City Trojans in three straight sets, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-10 at McBain tonight at 7 p.m. in the MHSAA Class C district semifinals.

The Bucks (who went 14-0 in the Jack Pine) didn’t have their best performance in several respects, but a perfect night at the service line enabled them to overcome their struggles in other aspects of their game and roll into Thursday night’s championship match against the 10th-ranked McBain Ramblers, who swept Houghton Lake in three straight sets in the other semifinal.

Not committing a single service error kept the Bucks from giving away any points in that regard, while it also allowed them to go on several long scoring runs which prevented the Trojans from mounting any offensive streaks of their own.

Roscommon improved to 43-7-8 overall.

Peyton Church paced the Bucks, going 23 of 23 serving with three aces and 18 digs. Sydney Blanchard served for two aces while adding 12 digs and five kills. Skylar VanWormer’s numbers weren’t eye popping, four kills and three blocks, but they were each of her points were important to the Bucks’ success.

Maria Jobin showed her floor hustle with nine digs and had a hot night swinging with 18 kills. Sarah Barnhart also had a big night with one ace, 15 digs, 27 assists and eight kills. Gwyn Murray had five kills.

“Gwyn and Skylar were just really active at the net,” Roscommon coach Angie Dalak said. “We really didn’t play that well. If we would have missed any serves that could have tanked us even more.

“So it was a pretty big deal that we were able to keep that 100 percent serving going because other aspects of our game weren’t doing that well. It just helped us get the wins. Peyton Church came alive halfway through Game 1 and started really playing well.

“Between her and my middles (hitters), and (Barnhart) playing solid, it really made our night go a lot smoother than it at first appeared to. We can’t be off at all (against McBain) and expect to win. Hopefully we come ready.

“We’ve got a lot of wins under our belt, and a lot of games. We’ve had a lot of growth, and hopefully that shows (against McBain). I think with them (the Bucks), they rise to that (the high stakes pressure). I think they show up on those days.”

Roscommon has played McBain a few times in the regular season and fared well enough against the Ramblers to have confidence it can get the job done.

The Bucks split with the Ramblers in a tournament and all the scores have been really close. Roscommon certainly feels it has the capability to win.
