Roscommon girls fall in District final

By Greg Gielczyk
MCBAIN — Roscommon was ready for Thursday night’s MHSAA Class C district final at McBain High School against the 10th ranked and tournament host McBain Ramblers, but the Bucks couldn’t get the key runs they needed to overcome the Ramblers power and fell in three straight sets, 22-25, 28-30, 10-25.
The Bucks certainly had momentum on their side after clinching the Jack Pine Conference title outright by winning three matches in the conference tournament which counted for 50 percent of their points total.
Having played the Ramblers a couple of times in the regular season, and beating them in one set, the Bucks also had the confidence needed to face them.
But the Ramblers answered the challenge and came away with the title, moving on to regional competition next week.
“It was such a frustrating night,” Roscommon head coach Angie Dalak said. “We were pumped and ready for this game. We came out strong and were neck and neck until point 14 when they had a little run that made the difference in the end.
“Game two was such a fun game. It was tight right up until the last point. We had our chances to end it multiple times but blew chance after chance. It was very exciting but led to the team coming out very frustrated (for the third set) and we never got our mojo back.
“I wish we would have fought harder and that the end of the season would be at least another week away, but we worked hard. We had a successful year, and we made gains all season long. We won the conference, which was one of our main goals, and grew as a team. We have a lot of positive things to work on moving forward, but will miss our seniors and thank them for everything they have given the program.”
Individual leaders for the Bucks: Peyton Church 15 of 16 serving with 16 digs, Sydney Blanchard 11 of 12 serving with four kills and eight digs, Maria Jobin 20 kills and five digs and Sarah Barnhart 9 of 10 serving with 14 digs and 24 assists.
McBain defeated the girls in three straight, 25-22, 30-28 and 25-10.
