William G. Baese of Houghton Lake

William G. Baese, 95, Houghton Lake, passed away on October 20, 2016 at Masonic Pathways in Alma. Bill was the son of Herman and Hazel Baese, born on September 28, 1921.

Bill was married to Beatrice Hoshield in 1939 at Sheppard, MI. Last December 16, they celebrated 76 years of marriage. They have three children: Tom Baese(Doris) of Houghton Lake, Don Baese(Pat) of Carson City, Wilma Barber(Tom) of Roscommon. Grandchildren include Charlotte McLain(Brad), Loretta Czada(Cory), Emily Baese, Ian Baese, Sarah Barber, Megan Barber. Great grandchildren are Haley Czada, Zac Czada, and Jake Schissler.

He was predeceased by his sister, Edith Kaufman and brother, Herman Baese. He has many nieces and nephews.

Before moving to Houghton lake in 1956, Bill was a farmer in the Elsie, MI. area. He and his son Tom, owned Baese Builders in Prudenville. Together they built many homes and businesses. The Rocking Chair Gift Shop, The center section of Arnie’s, the Masonic Lodge, and the Aloha Ranch in Merritt, to name a few.

Bill was always a horse person and had a horse until just a few years ago. From working in the fields, showing horses, to building horse drawn vehicles, horses were always in his life. He had a Tennessee walking horse that he both roped with, and showed. winning many ribbons. After retiring from building, Bill started restoring, and building horse drawn carriages and sleighs. He built and restored over 200 vehicles. His vehicles went all over the United States and won several awards. He was featured in many newspapers all over the country. Bill could be found in his workshop, sitting around the wood stove telling stories with his friends.

Tip-Up-Town was one of Bill’s favorite events. He was always working with the Poor People’s Party on their fun-filled shows. Having fun was always on his mind. Taking his mule, Jenny into the local bank was one of his pranks. He was Marshall of TUT in 1973.

Bill Loved hunting, spending nearly 20 hunting seasons in Wyoming. While there, he served as a guide for one of the outfitters. He had great stories to tell of his adventures of hunting grizzlies, elk, big horned sheep, and mule deer. He was a great marksman with pistol, rifle, and shotgun. He was the founding officer of the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Mounted Unit and maintained his membership for over 30 years.

In 1992, with the help of his sons, he built a log cabin near Carson City from pine trees on the property. Many years of enjoyment followed there, spending a lot of time with family around the campfires. He also enjoyed revisiting his youth by helping with the farming while there.

He belonged to the Masonic Lodges in both Houghton Lake and Hubbardston, as well as the White Shrine. He was Worshipful Master multiple times and Mason of the Year. He has been a Mason for nearly 49 years.

Bill was named Roscommon County Man of the Year in 2014. He said he didn’t know why he received such a nice award, as he just did what he was supposed to do, lived a good life, and helped his community.

Donations may be made to the Masonic Charitable Foundation in Alma.

Funeral services for Mr. Baese will be conducted 2:00pm Sunday October 23, 2016 from Masonic Pathways Doig Chapel in Alma. Interment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery, Houghton Lake. Visitation will be held at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel from 4:00 to 7:00pm Saturday October 22, 2016. Condolences can be sent to the family online at www.christler-hopldship.com
