Library hosts Fine Art show

By Pat Foxx
ST. HELEN- On Aug. 12 the Richfield Township Library, with the help of Scott Rice of Kirtland Community College (KCC), held a Fine Arts show at the township hall. Showcased were efforts by St. Helen residents and KCC students. The collection contained wood carving, paintings, pencil work, stained glass, and other beautiful works.

Included were members of St. Helen Carvers and their works in wood.

Bob Snyder, one of the carvers, displayed a unique project. Zachory Rice (Scott’ son) thought he had lost his guitar. Unbeknown to Zach, his parents had given it to Snyder and asked him to carve it. What came out was a masterful carving that moves and flows like the music that comes out of it. Snyder presented Zach with the guitar at the show.

One of the young artists from Charlton Heston Academy, 12 year old Brooke St. Louis, entered a drawing that she did in school under the instruction of Art teacher Emily Ekdom of a horse’ eye. She calls the work ‘Shadow’. When you look into the pupil of the eye, you will see a train. St. Louis was hoping that it would make the horse look ‘scared and tame’ at the same time. Shadow is a rescue horse purchased by St. Louis’ aunt after a tragic accident took the life of the aunt’ favorite horse.

‘Some people threw some plastic out of a moving car at the horses, my aunt wound up with a concussion and her horse brought her home, lying flat on her back. It was discovered that he did it with a broken leg and had to be put down. My grandma talked her into getting another horse and that’ where Shadow came from,’ St. Louis said.

‘It was a lot of fun and we had an incredible turnout for this event,’ Librarian Lynn Taylor said. ‘We would like to make this an annual event.’

Visitors voted for their favorite piece. With all the talent in the room, it was hard to choose just one piece, but in the end, Michela Barton won the People’ Choice Award for her watercolor painting.
