Uncovering the past at Lumberman’ Monument

By Theresa Ekdom

OSCODA – They are digging into the past at Lumberman’ Monument in Iosco County this summer.

US Forest Service archaeologist Jim Renn, along with volunteers of all ages, is excavating the tourist store which burnt down in the 1970s. The digs are Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will continue until September 1.

So far they have uncovered artifacts that might be expected to be found in a souvenir shop and restaurant – pieces of pottery, figurines, pocket knives and lots of nails.

The dig is open to anyone who would like their hand at archaeology whether for an hour or the whole day. Trowels, sifters and other equipment are supplied. Lumberman’ Monument is located in Oscoda Township, at the junction of River and Monument Roads. It is 15 miles west of Oscoda and 12.25 miles north of Tawas.
