ROSCOMMON COUNTY – Michigan State Police troopers oversaw the extraction of an Almont man who fell from his tree stand on opening day of the firearm deer season.

At approximately 6 a.m., the 61-year-old man fell from his tree stand in Roscommon County in the Dead Stream Swamp area.

After falling from approximately 25 feet, he was able to crawl to his backpack, which was still on the ground, and retrieve his cell phone to call his brother and 911.

His vehicle was located, and his brother arrived to lead troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Houghton Lake Post and a deputy from the Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office to the victim.

Suspecting possible pelvic, back and chest injuries, troopers requested assistance from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City. With the difficult terrain and distance from any travelable roadway, and considering the
incapacitating injuries, the Coast Guard executed a basket air lift from the scene.

Troopers were assisted by Roscommon Twp. Fire Dept and EMS, Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office, a conservation officer
from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City.
