Bucks boys fall by eight to Harrison

HARRISON – Too many turnovers and missed free throws combined to ruin the Roscommon boys basketball team’s best efforts in a 48-40 loss to a very good Harrison team in the Jack Pine Conference on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Despite mounting a slim lead at one point in the fourth quarter, the Bucks (0-6, 0-4 JPC) fumbled it away.

It’s something coach MJ Ewald will be working on in practice as Roscommon begins its journey into the second half of the schedule.

“I loved our energy, hustle and enthusiasm throughout the game,” Ewald said. “(Gage) Sarna shot well from the 3-point line (hitting 5-of-8 attempts). (Dane) Smitz did a little bit of everything again, especially in finding open players and pushing tempo.

“(Trey) Heliin had his strongest game of the year so far. We also got some solid work from Carson Crabtree, who snagged seven boards. Kyle Hartman and Jeffrey Kuchar gave us some great minutes as well. The kids continue to work hard and improve.”

Rosccommon grabbed a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but then saw its offense tail off considerably in the second in being outscored by Harrison, 10-4 for a 17-14 deficit at the half.

Scoring picked up in the third period for the Bucks and they edged Harrison, 19-16 to tie the score, 33-33 heading into the fourth quarter. Harrison then outscored the Bucks, 15-7 over the final eight minutes.

Leading the Bucks in scoring was Sarna with 15 points, and he added two rebounds. Smitz finished with seven points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals. Heliin contributed six points, nine rebounds and two assists.
