Bucks having a tough go early in the season

HOUGHTON LAKE — It’s been a rough start to the season for the Roscommon boys basketball team. The Bucks dropped a 73-60 double overtime game to visiting Gladwin in the Jack Pine Conference on Thursday, Dec. 14 for their fourth straight loss.

Now 0-4 overall, and 0-2 in the conference, the Bucks were scheduled to play at Clare this Thursday before the Christmas break, and then resume action on Thursday, Jan. 4 at Harrison.

“The kids are playing hard, but we’re struggling to get a win right now,” Roscommon coach M.J. Ewald said. “We’ll get better.”

Dane Smitz, a junior, led the Bucks with 18 points. Roscommon senior Gage Sarna was also in double figures with 14 points. A pair of juniors, Trey Heliin and Kyle Hartman each had eight points.

Roscommon fought back from a 40-25 deficit to send the game into overtime tied at 48-48. Sarna and Smitz both hit some big 3-point baskets in each of the overtime periods to keep the Bucks close.

“I’m real happy with how Hartman, especially, is coming along,” said Ewald. “Seth Keipert (sophomore) continues to get better and play with more confidence. Sarna and Smitz did a great job executing their shots and sets at the end of the game. We’re also getting some strong minutes from Carson Crabtree (senior).”

Roscommon was frustrated on offense in a Jack Pine battle against Grayling on Tuesday, Dec. 12 in a 74-36 loss. Sarna led the Bucks with 13 points and two assists, while Smitz contributed six points.
