Bucks crush Farwell

ROSCOMMON — After a slow start the Roscommon boys basketball team eventually kicked its game into high gear and was able to dispatch Farwell 75-51 in a Jack Pine Conference game at home on Friday, Jan. 6.

Despite some early fits and starts the Bucks still established control of the game with a 19-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and they kept on rolling in the first half, outscoring Farwell by eight, 20-12 in the second period to build a 39-20 halftime lead.

The Eagles kept the scoring close in the third period but the Bucks finished the period with a 17-14 edge and went into the fourth period with a 56-34 cushion and closed the game out with a 19-17 edge in the final eight minutes.

“We knew that Farwell was going to come in and fight every possession,” Roscommon Coach M.J. Ewald said, “and they did. My kids played hard overall, but we have some work to do to continue improving.

“(Michael) Treml started out by scoring our first nine points and (Kaleb) Keipert continued to play well down low. (Gage) Sarna had his best game points-wise all season. Off the bench we got some really good minutes from Logan Strickler. Smitz, Sarna and Treml are doing a good job overall on the perimeter.”

Keipert wound up as the Bucks’ leading scorer on the night wiht 25 points and he finished with a double double as he pulled down 13 rebounds. Treml contributed 19 points, five rebounds, two assists and four steals. Sarna finished with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists. Grant Smitz added seven points, three assists and four rebounds.

Roscommon improved its record to 2-1 in the JPC and 5-1 overall while Farwell dropped to 0-4 in the JPC and 1-5 overall. The Bucks were scheduled to play at Sanford-Meridian on Wednesday
