Viking power past Cheboygan, 38-14

CHEBOYGAN – Grayling’ football team improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the newly re-configured Northern Michigan Football League with a rousing 38-14 victory over the Cheboygan Chiefs in Cheboygan on Friday, Sept. 16.

‘This was a great win for our program,’ Grayling head coach Tim Sanchez said. ‘Cheboygan is a tough team, and they got some really good players back from injury. We were proud how our offense performed, and excited for Cam (Summers) and Koedy (Dole) tying a MHSAA record for longest pass (99 yards).

‘Our defense made some adjustments in the second half and our players did a great job of executing. We were proud of their aggressiveness and toughness.’

Summers finished the game 11-of-19 passing for 171 yards and a touchdown. Beau Dutton had four catches for 70 yards and a score while Dole had 57 yards on four receptions. Summer also led the team in rushing with 70 yards on nine carries.

Ron Woidan led the defense with 21 tackles, which included nine solos. Noah Kolka had 18 tackles, Jacob Macfalda contributed 17. Dole made 14 tackles and had an interception. Nick Hunter also had an interception and Brandon Davison recovered a fumble.

GRAYLING – Despite playing giveaway to the Kingsley Stags with five turnovers the Grayling football team avoided potential disaster with a stout defense and an efficient offense that overcame those miscues to register a 35-21 victory in their Northwest Conference opener on Friday, Sept. 9 in Grayling.

Quarterback Cam Summers completed 11-of-19 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for another score and was the Vikings’ leading rusher for the game with 70 yards on just nine carries.

Beau Dutton was the leading receiver with four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Koedy Dutton hauled in four passes for 57 yards and Nick Hunter had two receptions for another 37 yards.

Defensively the Vikings were led by Ron Woidan with 21 tackles, nine of them solo stops. Noah Kolka had 18 tackles with six solos, Jacob Macfalda contributed 17 tackles with three solos, Dole made 14 tackles with two solos and had an interception, Zach Kelly had eight tackles, Brandon Davison seven with a fumble recovery, Justin Nicholas had six tackles, Nick Hunter had five and intercepted a pass and Anthony Moshier had five stops.
