Virginia Merle Couch

Virginia Merle Couch, 74, of Houghton Lake passed away Saturday July 7, 2018 at King Nursing and Rehabilitation Community after a long battle with Parkinson’s Dementia.

Virginia was born on September 10, 1943 in Flint to James and Georgia (Wright) Horton. Virginia grew up on the family farm in the Flushing area and graduated from Flushing High School in 1961.

Virginia married William W. Couch and was a wonderful wife, mother, and homemaker. She moved to Houghton Lake from Flushing in 1985 to become owner and operator of Scalawag’s Restaurant for several years. She welcomed you in as if you were at her home, and she hosted many church groups, fund raisers, private parties and Kiwanis Club meetings.

Virginia worked as a Display Designer for Arnie’s Arts and Crafts for many years and was an excellent Artist and painting was her specialty. She was a member of Houghton Lake Kiwanis and was known as a prankster and practical joker, always with something up her sleeve. Virginia had a great sense of humor and loved playing cards, especially winning so she could do her victory dance. Her special love was spending time with her grandchildren and her dogs.

Surviving Mrs. Couch are her daughter, Christine (Scott) Fulco of Houghton Lake; two sons, William (Renae) Couch of Prudenville, and James (Karen) Couch of Seattle, WA; seven grandchildren, Mandy, Jenna, Ryan (Traci), Lee, Mack, Justin, and Jimmy; three great grandchildren, Preston, Evan, and Bauer; sister, Marcia (Mackenzie) Endo of Kewadin; brother, James (Monica) Horton of Flushing; three nieces, Kara, Erin, and Lanie; great niece, Saiya; and great nephew, James.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents.

At Virginia’s request, “to remember the good times we had together,” private family Celebration of Life Services for Virginia Merle Couch will be conducted.

Memorial contributions in memory of Virginia are asked to be directed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014(www.michaeljfox.org).

Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family. Condolences can be sent to the family online at www.christler-holdship.com
