Frances Ann Hodges of Roscommon

Frances Ann Hodges, 93, of Roscommon, passed away April 4, 2016 at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital.

Mrs. Hodges was born Dec. 30, 1922 in Roscommon to Clarence J. and Salome (Forbush) Sheppard. She married Howard M. Hodges on October 26, 1946 in Grayling.

She was a lifetime Roscommon resident.

She owned and operated Hodges Lumber and Roscommon Sunoco Station with her husband. Mrs. Hodges was a former teller at Roscommon State Bank, working her way up to assistant vice-president.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, Roscommon.

Mrs. Hodges was a 1940 graduate of Roscommon High School and received her bachelor’ degree at MSU. She was very active in her church where she was a member of the Memorial Committee, Stained Glass Committee, Women’ Prayer Group and Women’ Fellowship where she was the treasurer for many years and volunteered for most of the charitable and fundraising activities of the group. She was named Woman of the Year in 1997 by the Roscommon Zonta Club.

Mrs. Hodges enjoyed sewing, playing the organ, snowmobiling, skiing and making the best molasses cookies. She had been a hospice volunteer as well as one of the original ‘flower girls’ who made cards with pressed flowers as a hospice fundraiser. She was active with the Roscommon Area Historical Society sharing her vast knowledge of Roscommon’ history and was honored for the last four years at the ‘over 89’ birthday party thrown by the Historical Society.

Surviving are three children, Dave (Roberta) Hodges of Farmington, Doug (Nanci) Hodges of Roscommon, and Jean (Philip) Baker of Gaylord; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Bev Granger of Roscommon and Jean Caldwell of North Branch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; son, Jim; grandchildren, Michael Hodges and James Terrill; sister, Dorothy Williams and a brother, Robert Sheppard.

Funeral services were held April 10, 2016 at First Congregational Church, Roscommon, with Pastor Nancy Bresette officiating. Burial was in Roscommon Village Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon.
