Volunteers Wanted for annual ‘Landing Blitz’

HIGGINS LAKE – The DNR promotes the annual ‘Landing Blitz’ event to increase awareness of the spread of aquatic invasive species (A.I.S.) by boats traveling from lake to lake. Hidden on the bottom, sides of a boat, on trailers, in fishing equipment, the bilge and in weeds that ride on props, what may not be even visible to the naked eye can cause a new infestation when deposited in another Lake.

July 3 and 4 will be the fifth year that the Higgins Lake Foundation has coordinated the program at Higgins Lake with volunteers, tee shirts and hand out items for boaters provided by the DNR as well as the HLF. This Community effort has the additional support of a ‘Boat Wash Education Collaboration’ group this year. The Higgins Lake Property Owners, The Higgins Lake Foundation and the DNR are working together to increase awareness of the A.I.S. spread through education and increased boat wash use. To advance this effort locally trained employees are located at Higgins launch sites this summer to educate boaters A.I.S. spread and preventive methods.

Please consider spending a few volunteer hours at one of the launch sites to help spread awareness of the A.I.S. threat to our inland lakes! The event will be July 3 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at North Higgins Lake State Park, South Higgins Lake State Park, the West Launch Site and Gerrish Marina.
