Sunday with the Elk

GAYLORD – It was a beautiful day today, if a bit windy.

Went up to Gaylord for dinner with friends and stopped to see if we could find a few Elk. This is the 100th anniversary of the reintroduction of these magnificent animals to Michigan.

The Eastern Elk, which originally populated the state, were deemed extinct in 1875 due to habitat loss and unregulated market hunting. The elk pictured here are the relatives of seven Rocky Mountain Elk released near Wolverine in 1918.

Michigan holds limited elk hunts each year in an attempt to maintain the herd at between 500-900 animals, depending on available quality habitat.
