Local October events entertain

Whether you are looking for spooky fun, or fun for the kids, Roscommon and Crawford County are the place to go! From scarecrows and pumpkins to a haunted forest, you can find many activities.

Grayling’ Forest of Fear will provide scares for adults from dark until 11 p.m. during the three weekends (Fridays and Saturdays) leading up to all hallows eve, Oct. 13-14, 20-21, and 27-28. The Forest of Fear is located at 1316 Stephan Bridge Rd. off of M-72 in Grayling. Proceeds from the event are donated to area charities.

Zoo Boo is set for the three weekends leading to Halloween, (Saturdays and Sundays) Oct. 14-15, 21-22 and 28-29. This is a great attraction for kids. Come in costume, trick or treat, play some games, enjoy the inflatables and feed the animals. The events are weather permitting so call ahead to 989-275-4500 or visit them on Facebook. Regular zoo admission applies. The zoo is located at 6327 M-18, Roscommon. They are open from noon to 4 p.m.

Keeping up with the Halloween theme, on Oct. 21 from 6 – 9 p.m., there is a Ghostly Adventure & Gallery Readings at the Houghton Lake Historical Society. The event is located at 1701 W. Houghton Lake Drive, in Prudenville. Proceeds from the event help fund the Historical Playhouse.

Bart’ Annual Fall Fest will be Oct. 21-22 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22. The market is at 431 W. Houghton Lake Drive in Prudenville. Pumpkins, kids corn maze and more.

What is Halloween without Punkin’ Chunkin’? The annual event is scheduled on Oct. 14, 15, 21, and 22 at Wellington Farm Park. The event will be held on the above days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 989-348-5187.

Ocktoberfest will be held Oct. 28 from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus hall, 165 W. Federal Highway, Roscommon. Drinks, games, food and music. DJ from 1-4 p.m. and a live band from 4 – 9 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center.

The Roscommon Area District Library is hosting a Halloween Lock in for teens and tweens aged 11 to 16 Oct. 28 starting at 9 p.m. See Brittany at the library for more information.

St Helen’ 13th Annual Trunk or Treat will be held Oct. 28 at the Richfield Township Park starting at 6 p.m. It includes a haunted hayride and walking trail, bonfire, hot chocolate, and prizes for best costume.

Also on the 28th, Boy Scout Troop 955 will be hosting a Haunted Trail at the Houghton Lake Historical Village along with games and concessions. All ages welcome.

On Halloween night, Oct. 31, the Gerrish Township Police Department is hosting their 9th Annual Trunk or Treat. The event goes from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gerrish Township Municipal Center. Costumed kids can walk from vehicle to vehicle collecting treats.

Houghton Lake’ Lions Club Halloween event at Bobcat Fields will be a little different this year – it will be held inside the High School instead of on the football field. Games, cider and donuts, bike drawing, a haunted hallway and more are slated for this inside event that runs from 6:30 – 8 p.m. on Oct. 31.
