Youth group service trip teaches community support

ROSCOMMON COUNTY – St. Michael’ and Our Lady of the Lake High School Youth Group returned home from their week long service trip in Detroi. The 12 youth and two adults worked at Forgotten Harvest, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Gleaners Food Bank July 9 – 13.

Forgotten Harvest rescues perfectly good food that might otherwise go to waste from a variety of partners that span the spectrum of the food industry such as: grocers, distributors, major manufacturers, farms and entertainment venues. The food is donated and rescued from over 800 locations.

Gleaners collects nearly 39 million pounds of food a year and distributes 89,000 meals each day including providing nourishing food and nutrition education to 171,000 children a year. Every dollar donated provides three meals and 95 cents of every donated dollar goes to food and food programs.

Capuchin Soup Kitchen was inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, they tend to people’ basic needs, especially the need for food. They also strive to inspire minds, nourish spirits, and address root causes of social injustice.

The youth worked hard at all three sites, sorting and repacking thousands of pounds of food for redistribution serving over 2,500 persons a day. The youth groups always returns home with a greater appreciation for what they have and how they can continue to support their local community.
