School gets new playground equipment

GRAYLING – Grayling Elementary students have something new on the playground. It is a GaGa Ball pit. GaGa Ball is a form of dodge ball that is normally played in a ‘pit’ (the small, soft ball cannot hit anyone above the knee). According to gagaballpits.com, “The word ‘Ga’ means Hit or Touch, so ‘Ga-Ga’ means Hit-Hit.”

This project was initiated by The Crawford Health Improvement Committee (CHIC). According to Kim Chandler, Health Education Supervisor for District Health Department 10, “this committee was formed in 2015 and is a subgroup of the Crawford County Collaborative Body GǪ to address the issue of obesity in Crawford County specifically through healthy eating and physical activity initiatives.’

On the committee, there is active representation from the District Health Department 10, Grayling Hospital, MSUE, Commission on Aging, and MDHHS.

Funding for the project came from The Crawford Health Improvement Committee.

Chandler said, ‘Earlier this year, CHIC GǪ received $5,000 in funding from the Tencon Health Plan to implement physical activity and nutrition changes in Crawford County. One of the purchases that was made with the funding was the Gaga Ball Pit for Grayling Elementary School.”

Mr. Tom Snider and his family built the pit for the students.
