GRAYLING –Hartwick Pines State Park celebrates the forest and trees of Michigan during their annual Forest Fest. Held Aug. 13 this year, the rain put a little damper on the festivities, but there were plenty of inside activities to keep everyone happy.

20 different stations were set up around the park, inside the Visitor Center and at the logging museum. Kids were given a booklet when they arrived listing the activities such as ‘Listen Dr. Suess’s book The Lorax’, ‘Shake Smokey’s hand’, or ‘make a pinecone birdfeeder’. After each activity their book was stamped. After participating at the different stations, the kids were given Smoke Bear hats or Frisbees as prizes.

“The idea is for kids to enjoy themselves and learn more of the natural resources, especially forestry. It’s a full family experience,” Craig Kasmer, Interpreter at Hartwick Pines said.
