ST. HELEN – When Andrea Gregory of Houghton Lake came to the Charlton Heston Academy (CHA) Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) at the beginning of 2016 she had been supporting ‘Tabs for Tots’ a charity that raises money for children’ medical equipment by collecting aluminum can tabs. She asked the PTO to cosponsor the drive with St. Helen American Legion hoping to encourage students to give back.

CHA began their Tabs for Tots program this spring requesting students to bring in their tabs until August. Jugs representing the colors of the student body, Blue for K – 2nd grades, Red for 3rd – 5th, and White/Black for 6th – 11th grades, were placed in the hallway for students to deposit their tabs. Every time the students filled the five gallon water jug, their classes won Popsicle party. The class with the most tabs collected by August won a bigger prize.

Kids diligently brought in the tabs. Red and Blue teams were neck and neck throughout the contest, with Red just squeaking through by collecting just under three jugs of tabs. The Blue team filled 2 -+ jugs and the White/Black team filled 1 1/3 jugs.

The students on the winning team were surprised with a private screening of ‘Pete’ Dragon’ at the West Branch Cinema 3. The PTO provided pop and popcorn for the students.

‘It was such a huge success that we plan to run another tab collection contest during the new school year,’ Gregory said.

‘We are so proud in how diligently they set out collecting the tabs, they did an incredible job.’

Gregory will take the tabs to the St. Helen American Legion for them to donate. The proceeds will be divided equally between hospitals surrounding the county.

‘Overall it was a job well done and we had a great time running it. I am anxious to see what the kids pull in this next year,’ PTO President Tracy Cruz said.
