LOVELLS – The Lovells Township Historical Society (LTHS) hosted its 10th annual Beaver, Beer & Banjo (BBB) event at the Lovells Riverside Tavern on Saturday, July 23. This was the largest turn-out in the event’ history with 323 people attending, enjoying beaver barley stew, cold beverages, and banjo music performed by Barry Van Guilder and friends. $3293 was raised, which helps to fund the Anna Biernat Scholarship at Kirtland Community College.
Anna Biernat was a charter member of the Lovells Township Historical Society. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student from Lovells, or if no one from Lovells applies, then to a Crawford County resident attending KCC.
Not only is the annual BBB event a fundraiser for the Anna Biernat scholarship, but it is a tribute to historical dinners that were popular in Lovells in the 1950s. Local resident Pat Harwood would trap beaver every winter. His wife Margie would cook up a large batch of barbecue beaver that was served at an annual dinner at Roy Scott’ Bar, a predecessor of the Riverside Tavern. Now the beaver is trapped locally by retired DNR biologist Steve Sendek and the stew is prepared for LTHS by Dixie Dave’ Restaurant in Birch Run. For several years, the entertainment has been provided by former Lovells resident Barry Van Guilder.
Besides the food and entertainment, those who attended took part in a 50/50 raffle, a silent auction, and T-shirt sales. This year’ T-shirts nearly sold out with just four shirts remaining. The silent auction included artworks from area artists Rod Lawrence, Heather Lovell, and Ken Wright, a bamboo fly-rod, antique furniture, books, quilts, wood carvings, and more.
Longtime Lovells Township Historical Society boardmember Glen Eberly has been the driving force for this event. Glen coordinates the event, makes sure the stew is prepared and schedules the entertainment. The rest of the boardmembers are also instrumental in the planning of the event, such as design and ordering of the T-shirts, T-shirt sales, organizing and running the silent auction, operating the 50/50 raffle, and set-up and take down of tables and chairs. Without the full participation of the LTHS board, this popular community event would not happen.
The Lovells Township Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was created in 1991 and operates the Lovells Historical Museums that included the Lone Pine Schoolhouse Museum and the Lovells Museum of Trout Fishing History. The Lovells Historical Museums are open Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., from April 30 to September 30.
