Roscommon receives mParks Community Service Award

ROSCOMMON – The Roscommon Metropolitan Recreation Authority (RMRA) was nominated for the mParks Community Service Award.

The awards recognize individuals and groups who show outstanding support to public recreation and park programs in their community. RMRA was nominated by North Higgins Lake State Park Unit Manager Josh Pellow.

The RMRA was recognized for the volunteer service time they commit for the maintenance of the Tisdale Triangle Pathway. The authority is in its fourth year participating in a land maintenance agreement with the Michigan DNR.

The group, along with the help of Bill Torongo, maintains the 8.1 miles of trails utilized for hiking and cross country skiing. Routine maintenance includes clearing falling trees, summer mowing and grooming for cross country skiing in the winter.

RMRA is the governing body over the AuSable River Center, CRAF Center, Gahagan Nature Preserve, maintains Tisdale Pathways, and Metro Park.

It completed a new playground at Metro Park in 2014 with current plans underway for further improvements in 2017. The next RMRA meeting is July 20 at the CRAF Center in Roscommon.
